Mary Byron Foundation receives major gift from Kentucky
Crime Victims Compensation Board
Funding to be used for direct service to victims in the Commonwealth
Louisville, Ky. — The Kentucky Crime Victims Compensation
Board has contributed $25,000 to the Mary Byron Foundation to support
its efforts in the fight against domestic violence. The gift will
be used for direct services to crime victims throughout Kentucky.
“We’re so grateful for the Board’s generosity
to the Foundation,” said Executive Director Marcia Roth. “With
this generous gift, we will be able to help women like Mary and
families who have been torn apart by violence.”
One of the Foundation’s goals is to encourage the healthcare
community to create “one-stop-shop” services for domestic
violence victims. Funding from the KCVCB will be used to arrange
a visit by Dr. Astrid Heger, founder and executive director of the
Violence Intervention Program at the Los Angeles County-University
of Southern California Medical Center, who will share her perspective
on the unique needs of the victims she serves. Heger is a member
of the Foundation’s National Advisory Board.
This is not the first time the KCVCB has supported the Mary Byron
Foundation. In October 2001, the Board helped to sponsor “Brake-ing
the Cycle of Domestic Violence,” cyclist Randy Kennedy’s
1,700-mile bike trip around the perimeter of Kentucky, raised more
than $40,000 for the Foundation and helped to drive home awareness
of domestic violence in communities throughout the Commonwealth.
Kennedy spoke to victims and their families at every stop during
his three-week journey.
Part of the state’s Department of Public Protection, the Crime
Victims’ Compensation Board provides monetary assistance to
needy innocent victims for the financial losses incurred due to
the physical and emotional injuries resulting from a violent crime.
