Mary Byron Foundation director appointed to State Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
Frankfort, KY - Governor Ernie Fletcher recently announced the appointment of Marcia Roth, executive director of the Mary Byron Foundation, to the Commonwealth’s Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. The 36-member council is authorized by law to promote coordination among state and local governments and private agencies to raise public awareness and reduce the incidence of domestic violence and sexual assault.
The council also will work to assess the availability of local victim services, make policy and legislative recommendations and establish local councils and domestic violence and sexual assault response teams. The state Cabinet for Health and Family Services provides funding for and administers the work of the council.
“Domestic violence and sexual assault are serious problems facing our commonwealth,” Governor Fletcher said. “This council will play a significant role in developing innovative approaches to combat these problems by working to raise public awareness of domestic violence and supporting effective victim services and law enforcement response. I appreciate the willingness of the council members to serve in this capacity.”
According to the National Violence against Women Prevention Research Center, one out of nine women in Kentucky has been a victim of forcible rape sometime in her life. A study of domestic violence in Kentucky reveals one of every three women has been victimized by an intimate partner.
Mark D. Birdwhistell, secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services said the members of the council offer the expertise, talent and insight to unite Kentuckians and raise the level of discussion and awareness of and progress toward finding ways to effectively stop domestic violence and sexual assault in Kentucky.
