Mary
Byron Foundation seeks nominations for "Celebrating Solutions"
Awards
Foundation
to provide cash awards to communities fighting domestic violence
The
Mary Byron Foundation is seeking innovative programs to battle domestic
violence. The Foundation has begun accepting nominations for its
first-ever Celebrating Solutions Awards Program, offering cash awards
to communities that have launched proven programs and services.
“We
are looking for programs that demonstrate success in breaking the
cycle of domestic violence in a given community,” said Marcia
Roth, the Foundation’s executive director. “We want
to recognize programs that can serve as models for the nation.”
Interested
organizations should download the award application from the Foundation’s
new website, www.marybyronfoundation.org. Applicants are required
to submit a nomination form and a program outline. If qualified,
applicants will be notified to provide additional information including
three letters of endorsement.
“Applications
will be judged by a panel of experts in criminal justice and public
policy development,” said Roth. “We will limit our focus
to programs that can help put an end to the generational cycle of
domestic violence.”
The
$10,000 grants will be given to programs that have been operational
for at least three years, demonstrate positive outcomes, are innovative
and replicable, and sensitive to ethnic and racial diversity. Those
not eligible for consideration include organizations other than
non-profit or governmental, individuals, organizations serving a
limited constituency, and basic research.
The
Mary Byron Foundation is named in honor of a Louisville, Ky., woman
who was shot to death by a former boyfriend on her 21st birthday.
Her death led to the creation of the nation’s first automated
victim notification service called VINE. The company responsible
for VINE, Apprissâ Inc., provided the initial seed money to
start the Foundation in October 2000.
The
deadline for submitting an application is September 15. Foundation
officials will announce the first winners in November.
