Mary Byron Foundation exceeds fundraising goal at second
annual golf scramble
Louisville,
Ky. — The Mary Byron Foundation, a local, public grant-making
charity, received a boost of more than $21,000 during its Second
Annual Mary Byron Foundation Golf Scramble last week. More than
120 golfers turned out to support the Foundation, contributing to
a nearly two-fold increase over the previous year’s fundraising
total. Proceeds from the scramble will support the Mary Byron Foundation’s
mission of funding and promoting innovative efforts in the fight
against domestic violence.
The
Foundation, named in memory of a Louisville woman shot to death
by a former boyfriend, was created in October 2000 with the help
of Appriss?, Inc. Louisville and Jefferson County responded to Mary’s
murder with the creation of VINE? (Victim Information and Notification
Everyday), Appriss’s flagship product and the nation’s
first automated system of victim notification.
“I
am truly moved by this outpouring of generosity from local businesses
and other supporters in the community,” said Pat Byron, Mary’s
mother and president of the Foundation. “This money will help
us to fund programs throughout the country and shape a national
agenda for change.”
The
Mary Byron Foundation recently contributed $2,500 to co-sponsor
a nursing seminar featuring Jackie Campbell, Ph.D., a Johns Hopkins
University professor and nationally-renowned expert on marital rape.
The seminar will be held at Bellarmine University on Oct. 3 in conjunction
with the Center for Women and Families and other sponsors.
The
Foundation will also host “A Decade of Change,” a gala
fundraising dinner on December 10, 2003 in Louisville to honor progress
made in the fight against domestic violence since Mary Byron was
murdered 10 years ago. During the event, the Foundation will unveil
a series of public service announcements available for nationwide
broadcast. Notable film actor Victor Rivers, a spokesperson for
the National Network to End Domestic Violence, is featured in the
PSAs and will deliver the keynote address at this historic event.
In
addition to these activities, the Mary Byron Foundation works to
support pioneering efforts to end domestic violence through a number
of activities. The Foundation’s Celebrating Solutions Award
recognizes institutions that have demonstrated an innovative approach
to and clear focus on confronting the root causes of domestic violence
and developing solutions to break the cycle. Each recipient receives
a $10,000 cash award in recognition of its work.
