Mary
Byron Foundation to Help the University of Kentucky Study Violence
Against Women
Foundation
joins effort to broaden the scope of domestic violence research
Louisville,
Ky.-The Mary Byron Foundation is helping the University of Kentucky
launch its new Center for Research on Violence Against Women. The
Foundation is contributing $10,000 to the new Center, joining other
Kentucky victim support groups that have announced plans to contribute.
Kentucky
First Lady Judi Patton and UK President Lee Todd announced plans
for the new Center last week calling domestic violence “one
of the most devastating social problems of our time.” The
Center will conduct research on issues related to domestic violence,
rape, stalking, and related crimes against women.
“Thousands
have devoted their professional lives to preventing violence against
women,” said Marcia Roth, the Foundation’s executive
director. “However, most receive their training on the job
with few opportunities to study this issue prior to graduation.”
Roth
believes the Center’s efforts to promote research will save
the lives of abused families in years to come.
“The
Center’s potential is unlimited. If criminal justice professionals
understood the elements which placed them and the victims at great
risk, if judges knew the keys to holding perpetrators accountable,
if mental health professionals knew how to stop perpetrators from
hurting their families, we could go far to eradicate this crime,”
said Roth. “We are pleased to see the University of Kentucky
take the bold initiative to tackle a problem not only in Kentucky,
but across the nation.”
The
University of Kentucky is expected to launch the Center for Research
on Violence Against Women in 2003.
