Appriss raises $37,000 for Mary Byron Foundation
Annual golf tournament kicks off Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Louisville, Ky. For the third consecutive year, Appriss Inc., provider of the VINE service, helped kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month with its annual Mary Byron Foundation Golf Scramble. The scramble, which was held Oct. 1 at Indian Springs Golf Club, raised $37,000 for the Foundation.
Since 2002, the scramble has raised $81,000money that’s been used to help combat domestic violence throughout the nation. Marcia Roth, executive director of the Mary Byron Foundation, said that’s how all of the money raised by the public charity, is used.
“The purpose of the Mary Byron Foundation is not only to educate and promote the prevention of domestic violence in our communities, but also to financially support domestic-violence prevention agencies and programs throughout the United States,” Roth said. “We know that providing financial support to those agencies and their programs is critical to their success; and we’re committed to doing everything we can to eliminate domestic violence.”
The Mary Byron Foundation was founded in October 2000 in honor of Mary Byron, a 21-year-old Louisville woman who was killed in December 1993 by an estranged boyfriend who had raped, assaulted and stalked her. Louisville-based Appriss donated $100,000 in seed money to establish the foundation.
The scramble is one of two key fund-raising events for the foundation. The other event, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 1, is the foundation’s Annual Gala Fund-raiser. U.S. Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D-Delaware), author of the Violence Against Women Act of 2000, will be the keynote speaker.
