“Mary’s Room” to serve domestic violence
victims in Los Angeles
Numerous
services offered at new family violence center
Los
Angeles— The Violence Intervention Program (VIP) at the Los
Angeles County and USC Medical Center has named a group therapy
room at its new facility in honor of Mary Byron.
The
VIP’s S. Mark Taper Foundation Family Advocacy Center is home
to the nation’s first hospital-based center dedicated to providing
medical and mental health services to victims of family violence
and sexual assault. “Mary’s Room” was designed
as a child-friendly and fully accessible group therapy room.
The
Mary Byron Foundation, a nationally-focused, public grant-making
charity, is named in honor of a young woman whose murder led to
the creation of VINE®, the nation’s first automated victim
notification system. The Foundation recognized the VIP earlier this
year with its Celebrating Solutions Award, a $10,000 cash prize
that highlights innovative efforts in the fight against domestic
violence.
The
VIP provides a “one stop shop” environment offering
medical, mental health, protective, legal and social services to
victims of family violence and sexual assault throughout Los Angeles
County. The S. Mark Taper Foundation Family Advocacy Center allows
the VIP to double its mental health therapy, case management, and
advocacy services.
“The
Violence Intervention Program is tackling the issue of violence
against women head-on,” said Pat Byron, Mary’s mother
and president of the Foundation. “It is an outstanding program
and I am deeply touched that the VIP would choose to pay tribute
to Mary in this way.”
